Process for Payment of Tax Online

Follow these simple steps to pay Self-Assessment Tax securely through the official Income Tax e-Filing Portal.

How to pay Self-Assessment Tax

Keep your PAN, Income Tax Portal password, tax amount and banking details ready before you begin.

Important for AY 2026–27: Select Income Tax Act, 1961. The Income Tax Act, 2025 applies to payments relating to Tax Year 2026–27 onwards.

Log in to the Income Tax Portal

Visit the official Income Tax e-Filing Portal and sign in using your PAN and password.

Open the e-Pay Tax section

From the dashboard, go to e-Filee-Pay Tax.

Create a new payment

Click New Payment, select Income Tax Act, 1961, and proceed with the Income Tax payment option.

Select the correct tax details

  • Assessment Year: 2026–27
  • Type of Payment: Self-Assessment Tax (300)
  • Tax Applicable: Income Tax other than companies, where applicable

Enter the tax amount

Enter the amount in the appropriate Tax field. Add interest, fee or other amounts only where specifically advised.

Choose a payment mode

Select the available payment mode, such as net banking, debit card, payment gateway, NEFT/RTGS or another option displayed on the portal. Verify all challan details before proceeding.

Complete payment and save the receipt

Authorise the payment through your bank. After successful payment, download and save the challan receipt/e-receipt for your records.

Send us the e-receipt

Please forward the paid challan receipt to our office so that the payment details can be verified and considered for further return filing or compliance processing.

Verify before payment

Three details that must be correct

An incorrect assessment year or payment type may require challan correction and can delay return processing.

Assessment Year Choose AY 2026–27 for income earned during FY 2025–26.
Minor Head Select Self-Assessment Tax (300), not Advance Tax or Demand Payment.
PAN and Name Verify the PAN-linked taxpayer name before confirming the payment.

Check the e-receipt

Before sending the receipt, ensure that it clearly shows:

  • PAN and taxpayer name
  • Assessment Year 2026–27
  • Self-Assessment Tax (300)
  • Amount paid and date of payment
  • Challan/CRN/CIN or transaction reference
